COMM GUIDE
William Pellerin is a partner in McMillan LLP’s Ottawa office. He has extensive experience litigating and advising on all aspects of international trade, including on trade remedies, economic sanctions, export controls, and customs compliance. He is also at the forefront of Canadian laws on supply chains and forced labour. William has a thorough understanding of international trade policy and government processes. He co-leads McMillan’s Sanctions Specialty Niche, one of Canada’s most active economic sanctions practices. As former Deputy Director, Trade Remedies and North America Trade with Global Affairs Canada, William oversaw and coordinated Canada’s response to international trade disputes and appeals. In his prior role as counsel to the Government of Canada’s Trade Law Bureau, William litigated for Canada in its challenge to the United States’ imposition of duties on softwood lumber from Canada, one of the largest trade disputes in the world. He is among the very few lawyers in private practice in Canada to have argued before the World Trade Organization (WTO) Appellate Body and dispute settlement panels. He is a sought-after commentator and speaker on international trade, and as such is frequently interviewed and cited by Canada’s leading media outlets.
